Poorly managed, chronic workplace stress causes a burnout. People struggling with a burnout feel empty, exhausted, and helpless to cope up.
In a survey conducted by Deloitte 77% of professionals said that they have experienced burnout at their job and about 42% of them said that they left a job particularly because they felt burned out. As appalling as this may sound, entrepreneurs and working professionals around the world continue to experience severe stress and anxiety about their jobs because of working consistently for long hours and trying to meet unrealistic deadlines.
So, let’s talk burnout
Have you been experiencing stress and anxiety every time something about your work comes up in your mind? Do you find it difficult to show up at your workplace every day because of the negative feelings that come up every time you start getting ready for work? Is your stress from work negatively impacting your personal relationships?
If you have said ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then it is likely that you are either in the early stages of burnout or you have burned out.
Without addressing the problem, you would only make it worse causing unwanted health problems and a slowdown of your performance at work.
Burnout among entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurs don’t easily acknowledge burnout because they feel it makes them averse to the love and passion they have for their ventures. This unacceptance makes burnout more difficult to cope with among business owners.
But just because you have reached a point where you have to reorient your lifestyle and your decisions to make them more sustainable doesn’t mean that you don’t love the work you started.
When you start a new venture, it is natural to have a lot of energy and zeal for the goals you want to achieve. This vigor helps you get the ball rolling and makes sure that your business enjoys a good start. As business grows, you realize that the time and effort you put into your ventures keep growing when you may have hoped of putting things into motion and resting a while. Realization that your business requires you to be constantly under the pressure of making new decisions which can shape the future of your company, can be stressful.
Eventually, you are so exhausted with continuous stress from making business decisions that you may not be able to cope any longer. Feeling permanently overworked or under time pressure or having a financial slowdown can quickly affect an entrepreneur to the extent where they may neglect their own needs.
Common signs of stress among entrepreneurs include:
Exhaustion
Exhaustion may manifest itself differently among different people. You may feel drained and emotionally spent, and you may lack energy all the time.
Alienation from work
When you are burned out, you may end up finding your work to be so stressful that you may get easily frustrated with it and may alienate yourself from it. For an entrepreneur, this becomes the source of a lot of sadness and worry because alienation for their business can be difficult to explain to others and to themselves.
Lower performance
A burnout usually impacts most of your daily tasks and activities. You may find your daily tasks to be overbearing and you may not be able carry out simple activities at home and at work displaying poor concentration and lack of creativity.
Seeking help is important
Entrepreneurs often do not realize that they are burned out. They relate the exhaustion and stress they experience as a direct effect of running business. But this is not true. While business does have its ups and downs, constant exhaustion is not something that you should have to live with just because you are running a business.
