Why Persevering is Key

Often, we have a dream or a goal and as we start to move towards it, things slow down or don't progress. Having the grit and moving forward is key.
One of my favourite quotes is by Nelson Mandela, when he said “It always seems impossible until it is done.”
When we look back through our lives, there will be many examples of learning something new, overcoming challenges or stepping into the unknown. What impact does it have on you when you look back at these achievements and successes?
What is shows me, is that we can achieve things and that we can succeed and the evidence from the past which supports this. This is why I believe persevering is key.
There are examples of many successful business people, entrepreneurs, leaders and so on who have shared their experiences and explained that success was never a plain sailing journey but one which was made up key learnings, the need to adjust to taking chances.
Here are some of my tips on driving forward with grit and perseverance:
1. Always keep the end in mind – When Stephen R Covey wrote his book, the Seven Habits of Highly Effective people, this is one of the things which stood out to me. As long as we know what we want to achieve, then we have that goal to work towards.
2. Power Up – find your motivational mantras and positive affirmations which will help you keep going. Read them out aloud and recite them on a regular basis. If you like fitness, then use that passion to give you energy to drive towards your goals by focusing on them during your workouts.
3. Be Flexible – The best laid plans can go awry, being flexible and willing to adapt is key – who knows, by following this approach, something even better may come out at the end
4. Be willing to listen – we may have the idea which we think is perfect or want to do things a specific way, if it is not working, take on the feedback from others, so you can learn and apply
5. Give yourself a chance – achieving goals is a journey and one which requires patience and time, imagine everything happened at the same time, we would be bombarded and not able to cope.
6. Enjoy the successes along the way – as the steps and milestones are achieved which move you closer to your goals, take out the time to celebrate as a form of recognition for persevering.
Just like anything that is worth doing, it needs to be pushed through and having the grit to do it can make the difference between achieving the dreams or not. Coaching a is a powerful mechanism to get you there because a coach becomes your trust partner, sounding board and most importantly, drives accountability from you. Are you ready?
