Closely Related Podcast Episode 2: Feedback is a “gift”
Posted on January 19, 2021 by Samantha Strom, One of Thousands of Career Coaches on Noomii.
The hosts tackle how to give and receive direct feedback (and why it’s so hard).
Giving and receiving feedback is one of the most important skills in the workplace, but it’s also one of the hardest. What do you do when your supervisor gives you vague performance reviews? What if you tell your boss the truth and get fired? It’s often easier to avoid difficult conversations than to address conflict head on. We get it. One time Sam got feedback from a teacher in 5th grade, and she’s still bitter about it. Hannah’s a ghoster. (Although she’s trying to reform.)
In this episode, we explore three stories about giving and receiving feedback in the workplace. Our first writer thought they’d been doing well at work, but was passed over for a promotion. Our second isn’t getting the training or opportunities they want. Our third is uncomfortable that their workplace reopened during the pandemic. We discuss various feedback strategies like appreciative inquiry and seeing every side to the story. We also give specific examples of how to communicate professionally and directly.
