How to get out of your own way
How many of us feel as if we are moving three steps forwards and two steps back in creating the life we want for ourselves?
My question is – Are you getting in your own way?
One of the most common reasons we get in our own way is that we “assume” to know things we actually don’t. We believe things to be “true” and absolute when indeed we may be wrong.
When was the last time you “assumed” you wouldn’t get the promotion you were after because you didn’t have exactly the right qualifications they were looking for therefore didn’t bother applying; or “assumed” you would never get everything done because there just weren’t enough hours in the day; or “assumed” If you don’t’ get everything done today the world will come to an end? ; or “assumed” you will just never find time to achieve the work/life balance I want?
There are two key elements here ASSUMPTIONS & TRUTH
– What is assumed?
– What is actually true?
Well the truth is:
– You will never know if you’ll get the job unless you apply- you may have other skills.
– There are only 24 hrs in a day but do you really need to complete everything today?
– The world will not come to an end if you don’t get your to-do list finished today
– If work/life balance becomes a priority for you – you will find time
The point I am trying to make is – Two ways of getting out of your own way are to:
1. Question your assumptions
2. Validate what is true
These two small steps may help clear the way forward and allow you to get out of your own way!
