Just because you like the job description, doesn't mean that you need to apply.

Q: You claim to wish to work in xyz industry but do you find yourself applying for jobs in abc and def and ghi?
Q: Are you spending time applying half heartedly knowing in truth you are setting yourself up for an almost certain rejection?
You could very well be panicking about income (completely understandable)
You could be feeling that in this sea of uncertainty any anchor will do (completely understandable)
Perhaps it’s a sign of “I’ll be rejected from the jobs I want anyway” imposter syndrome (completely understandable)
When you’re over 40, you do know yourself a bit and know what you need to do to feel upbeat at the end of every day. However, in these unusual times, managing your energy and keeping your mindset positive is super critical.
As it’s so noisy out there at the moment. You may get more rejections that at any other time of your life which is difficult to accept if you’re a high achiever.
Last Friday, a lovely client who started working with me just 2.5 months ago was offered a well-paying, interesting role in her chosen industry and in a brilliant organisation. We worked out a plan and were in very frequent contact. She invested in her professional future, took consistent and intelligent actions which paid off quickly. I am so proud of her.
Q: How can you get your voice heard above all the application noise?
Q: How can you make it easier for organisations to notice you?
Research the organisation inside and out to get as many clues as possible as to whether the organisation’s culture will be a good fit for you
The bonus is that if you like what you discover about them during your research and you choose to apply, it gives you a huge amount of data to include in your application that will boost your chances of standing out
And no, you don’t have to be wildly innovative you just have to be extremely thorough.
Don’t give up. Be wise and discerning. Keep at it. Roles are out there and organisations need you!
