In this article you will learn seven things you need to do if you want to get the maximum benefits from any coaching session.
Before you choose a coach or mentor, decide what you need in the mentor-mentee relationship. Once you have an idea of what you want to accomplish, you can begin the process of finding a mentor that will help you with your goals. Here are some guidelines you can use to select your mentor/coach:
1. Find someone who cares about you and wants you to succeed.
2. It needs to be someone who will hold you accountable.
3. You need someone who will challenge you and at the same time encourage you.
4. You need someone who has the experience in the area that you are interested in.
Here are seven things you can do to get the maximum benefits from your coaching sessions:
1. Meet with your mentor regularly – once a month.
2. Keep the time to about one hour.
3. Take time to prepare yourself for that session.
For every hour you will spend with the mentor you may need to spend 2 to 3 hours preparing for that session.
Make a list of questions that you want to discuss with your mentor.
Don’t use the time of the mentor to discuss non-important topics.
After each session, dedicate 1 to 2 hours to reflect and to make a plan to apply the wisdom the mentor shares with you.
4. Find ways to serve your mentor. Every human being has something he can contribute.
5. Express gratitude continually to your mentor for his service.
6. Always be ready to ask these three questions to your mentor.
a) Who do you know that I need to know?
b) What book are you reading that I should read?
c) What places or event (conferences) that you need to attend? Remember the places you go, the books you read (or listen to), and the people you associate with you, will influence the person you are and the impact you have in your community.
7. Be diligent in applying the counsels the mentor gives you.
Whether you pay the mentor/coach or not, the most gratifying thing for the mentor is to see you progress. Another way you can show gratitude to your coach is your desire to mentor someone else.
