Find out how to constantly evolve in your personal life and career.
I was speaking to a leader not too long ago and he brought into conversation a quote which really got me thinking: Is this someone with 20 years of experience or 1 year of experience that has been repeated 20 times? How does one make sure that you do not end up as a one trick pony, a person with limited experience that you have simply repeated? It reminds me of a certain philosophy I have adopted for myself far too late in my life: I am not a human being; I am a human becoming.
So, what am I getting at? It is the concept of constantly evolving ourselves as individuals. Learning from our experiences and adjusting our operating models or way of being based on these experiences. The wonderful thing about being human is we have the ability to learn, unlearn and relearn any behavior we put our minds to. Nothing is set in stone. The catch is this change or evolution takes real effort.
We each have our own ways of learning, I thought I would put down a few concepts for you to consider. Hopefully applying some of these concepts can help you be truly a human becoming.
Firstly, I am a firm believer in the idea that you cannot change what you do not observe. Make the time for self-observation. Find what works for you. Some people find meditation works, other journaling and some reflection walks. Either way you need to make the time to ask yourself the questions where am I now, where do I want to go? It is not possible to change something you do not observe. Make the time, no one else is going to do it for you.
Secondly, you need to have the desire to evolve. Do you know why you want to improve or evolve? Knowing what to improve and how you are going to improve it is part of the puzzle, it’s not all of it. You need to know why this evolution is important to you. What will keep you motivated to do the hard work when willpower is not enough? I have heard this called why power.
Thirdly, you need to have a plan. How are you going to make sure that you are constantly observing self and defining where to from here? You need a plan. What are the steps you are going to take? In order to do this, I honestly believe it is helpful to understand your own personality type that you resonate with. This will help you think through what are the components that are important to have in your plan.
Finally, partnering with a qualified coach who has a proven operating model can be an invaluable investment in your own journey to constant growth. Be sure to pick a partner who will ask the difficult questions, who knows that this is your process not theirs and who has a proven process that they will hold for you.
Don’t let yourself be that person with 1 years’ experience repeated 20 times! Take control of your own personal development.
