The Ultimate Side Gig

When we reject this work we not only rain on our own personal parades, but we also let down those around us.
All of us out here trying to live our best life, trying to succeed, pouring kindness and optimism into the world and workplace, we’re hustling. We’re grinding. Your heart’s in it. Mine is also.
However, its not enough. We have to do more. There is a mandatory side gig we all need to kick major butt at.
Any good side gig, career, business, relationship…any worthwhile hustle by definition is challenging, it stretches us, we have to put in hours, we have to study, we have to be relentless. We often throw ourselves into these challenges with abandon.
Now don’t you think the work we do on ourselves should, at a very bare minimum, equal the fervor with which we go after our careers, businesses, and projects?
Listen, I am not talking about the Dr. Oz, run of the mill, clean eating, yoga, get your sleep type of “self-care”. That’s all good stuff, but its elementary school stuff in the grand scheme. We gotta go further.
I’m talking about real dedication and rigorous effort. Honest self reflection with kindhearted prodding to be more and be better each day. Note that I did not say “do more” each day. Ironically, being more is often about doing less.
For large projects or initiatives we have visions and project plans. We consult with experts. We have measurement mechanisms in place and goals to track to. We keep tabs on issues and opportunities, take notes, and spend time everyday keeping it on track. We’re really proud when it goes well.
My question for you is this: Is your personal well being, success, and life journey not worth the same effort? More effort?
All other aspects of your life depend on this work. This is the most important gig of your life. This gig never ends. It takes gritty, dirt under your fingernails effort.
When we reject this work we not only rain on our own personal parades, but we also let down those around us. Only when we are deliberately and methodically pouring into ourselves can we give back at home, at work, and to our human community at large.
