My bio

A more complete bio of my experience and areas of specialization as a coach can be found here.
I left a career in corporate leadership so that I could empower others to take new directions for deeper purpose, achieve their big goals, and live a more fulfilling life.
PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH: I believe passionately that success is within reach of every individual when they possess a positive attitude, resilient outlook, intentional strategy – and a strong dose of common sense. My “Take risks. Make mistakes” program will take you on a journey to help you define what you want success to look like. Then, I will partner with you to turn your vision into reality.
I work with clients who want: clarity on the next step(s) on their career path; greater fulfillment and purpose (personally or professionally); more confidence so they can make a change or take a risk; stronger leadership skills; tools to manage anxiety more effectively.
Our work together may include: focusing on beliefs, values, and goals; getting clear on what true happiness might look like; envisioning the future; exploring what is possible; examining internal obstacles (such as fear) to making changes or taking risks; designing a strategy or plan to move forward.
BACKGROUND: My professional experience includes: global communications and marketing (Siemens); management consulting (Booz Allen and multiple U.S. intelligence agencies); government policymaking (U.S. Secretary of Defense), grassroots organizing (national political campaigns); and higher education (University of Maryland and the RAND Corp). Throughout my career, I have provided my expertise directly to senior political and government leaders and corporate CEOs. To mix things up, I co-produced films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. I am a proud husband and stepdad to active-duty U.S. Marines and I volunteer as a financial counselor to junior service members. I am an avid scuba diver, mountain climber, and adventure traveler. Whenever possible, I volunteer overseas for causes such as wildlife conservation and refugee resettlement.
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION AS A COACH:
Personal exploration and resiliency: I have sent hundreds of resumes and gone on countless interviews for jobs I did not get. I have also navigated myself through, and rose up the ranks, of various organizations and companies. I was downsized without notice, forced to change careers – and increased my salary by 40%. I have left positions after growing frustrated over poor leadership – and I found meaning in new pursuits. When I got bored at the office, I went off to produce films – and found myself walking the red carpet at my own film premieres.
Communication and leadership: Early in my career, I went undercover to investigate white supremacist groups. I learned how to put aside my assumptions in order to truly understand their belief systems. From my work on political campaign, I learned how to connect with people by using their own language. I now apply these specialized listening skills every day, from teaching to global marketing, from managing teams to coaching.
Managing change: Today’s working environment often means sudden shifts in leadership, mission, and culture. I have led transition efforts after large corporate mergers as well as the U.S. government reorganization after 9/11. Successful transformations require deliberate strategies that put employees and other stakeholders at the center.
Thriving with diverse perspectives: I learned early in my career the strength of working on diverse teams. Then, as a leader, I put those lessons into practice when devising marketing campaigns designed to reach global audiences and building teams to create powerful synergy between civilian and military members. I have also lived and worked in many countries and cultures. As the beneficiary of wise counsel from many mentors over the years, I now share my life and professional experiences with others, including the younger LGBTQ generation.
