What is Lean? Will it really make a difference?
Lean is defined as a method for eliminating non-value or wasted activities. Philosophy based thinkers believe that with any process, improvements can be made. Poke Yoke is a Japanese term meaning to mistake proof. We look at Lean as a way to rid our activities of any mistakes before they happen. Many times mistakes arise and the use of Lean principles can be used to root out the cause of the mistakes or errors that stare us in the face.
Certain steps are involved in this evaluation. Many times the value, to the end user, will determine the process steps that may be inadequate or just not needed. Through Lean we will identify the true value of our decision making activities.
Once we have determined the desired outcome, a true understanding of the process or activities will be revealed. By mapping out the steps or activities, the process will become clearer. Clear understanding will guide the elimination of unneeded or non-value added activities in the process. As changes are made we will see better results. With this opportunities to continuously improve abound.
