5 Strategies to Crush Your “Go Big or Go Home” Goals
Do you have big goals that you really, really, REALLY want to accomplish, yet you can’t seem to get going? Excuses and procrastination keep popping up leading to frustration and disappointment?
Keep reading to learn proven strategies to move those blocks and achieve your dream goals! Yes, I said “DREAM GOALS.”
STRATEGY #1 – CREATE AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION
Your goal needs to inspire you. Be clear about why the goal is important to you and how it fits into your overall vision.
Does it help you become the person you aspire to be?
Can you imagine life without this goal?
Having a real connection and revisiting it often, will help you push past procrastination and obstacles.
STRATEGY #2 – CREATE A VIVID VISION
If you can’t see it, you can’t create it!
Spend time envisioning your future self basking in the glow of achievement. What does it feel like? What steps did you take to reach the goal? Who are you with? What are they saying? How are you celebrating your victory?
Get your journal out and record your vision. Revisit your journal when you get weary, distracted or scared.
STRATEGY #3 – HAVE A POSITIVE MINDSET
“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.” – Gail Devers – Olympic gold medalist and champion
Strongly believe that you will achieve your goal. We must stay positive and manage our self-talk. Self-talk is usually the voice inside that sends messages such as:
“stay put”
“don’t make waves,”
“if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!”
“who are you to think you can do this?”
It’s the voice that often says you really shouldn’t try that, you might hurt yourself, you might fail, etc. The problem is if we let negative self-talk run the show, we run the risk of sticking with the status quo. That’s not going to get you anywhere.
This is where self-awareness and self-reflection really make a difference.
Feed your soul positive thoughts and reward yourself for thinking positively. Tell yourself that you will achieve the goal because you are amazing, and the goal is yours to grab! Remember that you may fall down and that is good. It means you are trying new things and not staying safe.
Learn from the times you fall and use it to propel you forward.
STRATEGY #4 – TAKE DAILY ACTION
“We do not develop anything with one giant step. No matter who you are, or what you do, each one of us has had to take a lot of individual steps to accomplish a task, a job, a career, or even a hobby.” – Catherine Puliser, Author.
The key is consistency. No one loses 50 pounds overnight day. Every step counts. Set small milestones and chunk out your goal. Be persistent and set daily intentions of what you are going to do that day to make PROGRESS towards your goal.
Write down your intentions and commit to them. Commit to yourself.
STRATEGY #5 – BUILD IN ACCOUNTABILITY
“When you have a dream that you can’t let go of, trust your instincts and pursue it. But remember: real dreams take work. They take patience, and sometimes they require you to dig down very deep. Be sure you’re willing to do that.” Harvey Mackay – Business Mogule and Author
Research shows that we are 76% more likely to achieve a goal when we have an accountability partner. That is staggering. So, get an accountability partner to meet with regularly. Make sure to choose someone who will hold you to it and call you out when you are making excuses.
You can also be your own accountability partner by conducting a monthly or quarterly self-review. Ask yourself:
What Went Well?
What Didn’t Go So Well?
What Will I Do Differently?
Also, find your tribe. Find a community of people who have similar goals and who are doing what you want to do. Being part of a tribe with common values, goals and vision is primal.
BONUS STRATEGY FOR MY TRIBE – KICK FEAR IN THE BUTT!
“You can conquer almost any fear if you will make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind.” — Dale Carnegie
Someone said, there’s no such thing as failure; there is either success or learning opportunities. What would happen if you reframed failure so that you see it as an opportunity to learn and grow, not failure at all?
You’d be so surprised how much fear sabotages our growth. Our brain is fearful of change – it can’t distinguish between change that is helpful or harmful. It just knows that you are trying to do something new and fear arises. You may notice resistance from within and it may mask itself in logical reasons why you shouldn’t do the new thing. That is fear. It can rule your life. Recognize fear, then bravely push through it.
