Coach Vs Coachee !! Who Wins ??
It was a normal working day for me at office .. being a Business Head , it meant being on phone with clients , interacting with junior colleagues , sessions with your direct superior and also lateral superiors and the list goes on…
I remember while winding up after an exhausting day at work , my inbox made the usual ring announcing arrival of a new mail. Though tired , some thing inside , pushed me to read the new mail. It was from HR. As all mails from HR , this too was worded in niceties and going round the core issue.. after few times of reading , despite my tired brain , I figured out that the management has placed me in the top percentile among the key executives and has nominated me for Coaching sessions with a reputed Senior Leadership Coach..
Why is it that , on one hand , I am identified to be in the top percentile and yet nominated for Coaching ? Seemingly contradictory..
My mind was in F1 mode running through various scenarios .. is something wrong with me ? Is it one way of the management hinting for a counseling sessions ? Is it normal for performing executives to undergo Coaching ? Will I be looked down upon by my peers as “ the guy “ undergoing Coaching ? Bechaara types ? Questions and more questions no FAQ could offer answers ! I figured out the answer a bit later though..
On the scheduled day , the Coach walks in with his tool kit (!) to mend my personality .. However the initial Zero meeting was very cordial and least intrusive , which got me more curious about the possible "treatment " up ahead . But alas that was not to be as there was no treatment but only cordial meetings and assignments that probed my mind , thoughts and therefore actions.. After about six months of such engagement , and after having challenged me in my goals and performance methods , I was flagged “ Good to Go “” !! This meant that I have acquired the credentials for the top slot ..
Apparently , my apprehensions , fears and doubts were seemingly unfounded . I realized that Coaches actually work with their clients / Coachees to bring out the very best and that too in challenging and tough situations . Our perceptions about Coaching specfially in Indian context needs to be reviewed.
All in all , this was a great ending . Or was it a beginning for a better career ?
It is a victory for the Coach and the Coachee .. real WIN WIN..
