Angry at the Weather

It’s never the circumstance, but always our thoughts about the circumstance, that determines our experience.
It’s true, I was mad at the weather last Friday.
I mean, really ticked off. Like I spent most of my walk grumbling to myself about how unfair it was that it was snowing in May.
I had started out on my walk just fine, but soon a few snowflakes began floating down from the sky and speckled my eyeglasses.
It was about then that I passed a gentleman, who my husband and I lovingly call, “Happy Guy”.
We often see “Happy Guy” on our walks and he always has a big, bright grin and something funny and pleasant to say. His beautiful spirit warms my heart, and reminds me of how I want to show up in the world.
Welp, on this day, “Happy Guy” was not feeling it. In fact, he was scowling.
As he approached me, he pointed to his outerwear. “Hat, gloves, heavy coat in May? This is bullshit,” he said.
I gave him an agreeable nod, and then said something coach-ey like, “Remember, good weather is coming!” He just shook his head.
It was after this exchange that I started ruminating on the crappy weather.
I thought…
Why is it snowing in May?
I sure miss the typical blue skies and warm air of springtime.
Haven’t we had enough to deal with lately?
“Happy Guy” is right, this IS bullshit!
Now, in retrospect, I realize how bananas it is to be mad at the weather. But these were my thoughts of choice that morning.
And they really didn’t serve me well.
I finished my walk that day feeling grouchy and cheated out of nice weather.
After a few hours, I noticed that I was still feeling gloomy, and I began to get curious about my thoughts. What had me feeling so down?
And, once I realized what was going on, I truly laughed-out-loud! I was mad at the weather!
I think it is interesting how we humans let our thoughts about a circumstance that we can’t control get in our way. It’s like we give our power to the circumstance, even when it works against us.
It’s never the circumstance, but always our thoughts about the circumstance, that determines our experience.
This made me think about the current circumstance we are all dealing with right now, the pandemic.
We are all trying to manage our minds around this unprecedented situation, and navigating this can be tough. It’s natural for our primal brain to want to use it to keep us from moving forward.
If you’ve been thinking lately, “The future is too uncertain to pursue new goals right now”, you aren’t alone.
But, understand, that’s just your brain trying to keep you “safe”. That’s its job.
Moving forward despite the circumstance requires you to manage your mindset in a way that better serves you.
Remember, the future is always uncertain, and so you must move forward anyway. Otherwise, there will always be an obstacle to wedge you in place.
Nothing is going to change if you don’t take intentional action!
The key is, you must be willing to pivot when unforeseen circumstances get in your way.
The path to manifesting your dreams is rarely linear, and getting there requires a willingness to adapt and adjust your course whenever necessary.
And, you have to be willing to stay the course, even when you can’t see the finish line.
Current conditions are requiring us to stay present and to be very purposeful with our time. We have to strategically break down our goals into small, manageable steps.
So many of my clients are doing this right now, DURING A PANDEMIC, and it just blows my mind! They have not let this circumstance stop them.
They are planning adventures, changing careers, relocating, furthering their education, losing weight, improving their health, dating online, opening businesses, redefining their businesses, courageously leading, and so much more!
Have you been using the pandemic as an excuse to put your dreams on hold?
What if this is the perfect time to forge ahead?
If you live in Northeast Ohio like I do, you are not going to want to let the weather determine your future.
Friends, you have to make your own sunshine!
