A lot of people are still confused about this whole self-love concept.
In this article, you will finally get a clear idea about what it is. And on top of that, I will give you effective guidelines to begin practicing self-love right away!
Let us begin by what self-love IS.
I like the definition by Dr. Khoshaba: “Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth.” So, in order to nurture self-love, we need to take ACTION!
What it is NOT?
It is not egoism, nor selfishness, nor laziness, nor ‘I don’t give a shit’ attitude, and has nothing to do with how healthy or attractive you are.
So, how can you get to the place of self-love?
Below are the four ACTION steps that, in conjunction, will transform how you perceive yourself.
Step 1 – stop doing this!
• Stop criticizing yourself
• Stop feeling guilty for everything you do and don’t do
• Stop being around people who disrespect you
• Stop doing what you hate. It is possible to find another job and even start everything from scratch. Move on!
• Stop feeling sorry for yourself and as a result procrastinating, eating junk and harming yourself in other ways
Step 2 – get to know yourself
• Spend time alone
• Learn to listen to yourself
• Discover what your true preferences and desires are
• Establish what your goals are – living with a purpose makes you feel so much better about your life in general. Self-love is dynamic, it strengthens in the process of your personal growth.
Step 3 – do what you need for your wellbeing
• Pamper yourself occasionally – treat yourself to a spa session, style your hair, do makeup, buy something amazing to wear, go traveling
• Make time for self-development
• Get an adequate amount of rest, exercise on a weekly basis and make the right food choices
• Find the place where you recharge, it can be a church, being around friends or feeding swans at the lake
Step 4 – awareness
• You’re a priority, so your mental and physical wellbeing requires your loving care. BUT! Our family, friends, colleagues also need our love and care. So, try to find a balance between caring for yourself and others. Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
• Don’t feel sorry for yourself – life is a struggle for all of us in one way or another, so never give up, no matter what
• Forgive and let go of the past
When you love yourself it shows in every aspect of your demeanor. As a consequence, it sends a positive message to everyone around you about who you are and how you like to be treated.
