Even if you are retired you can still have a new career.....
During this time, in our economic whirlwind, you may find yourself in a position of opportunity. This position may have been given to you or you may have been able to make the choice yourself. Whether your employer found it necessary to reduce company employees or you have decided to try something new, an opportunity is before you. This opportunity may have left you feeling anxious; however, hopefully you will quickly come to a point where you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
If you can see the light it is now time to take back control of your life and career. Unfortunately the word meditation conjures up a sense of wastefulness for the go-getter. We want to attack, make something happen, get moving, and certainly the time is now!
Take a moment to think this through. Ask yourself one simple question, “When making a business decision do I jump in or do I give some time to think about options and risks involved?” Hopefully you came to the conclusion that reflection is necessary. Your career decisions are so much more important than whether to buy a machine or hire an employee. Holding a job can be considered temporal whereas a career is permanent. That is not to say career changes shouldn’t happen, it’s just that they don’t usually happen as often as a job change. Have you been talked into giving this career opportunity some thought? Wanna try some meditation? Good let’s get started.
Schedule some time for alone time, gather pad and pen, and find a place of quiet. Now let your mind drift. Specifically think about past career dreams. Many children dream of noticeable service-oriented careers like the fireman, policeman, or a position in the medical field. As we enter into the high school years we are able to view the outside world in a broader scope and began to visualize ourselves in a different career that previously thought. When these career positions will come to your mind jot them down on the pad of paper you have with you.
Keep thinking and writing about these dreams. Did you make plans on how to achieve these goals? How far did you get with educational demands to work in this field? What steps did you make to find a position in this career? Be sure to write all your thoughts on the paper. All the questions and answers should be on this paper too. You may find that you need more time. If you don’t finish in this sitting you can make additional time for career dream reflection. Don’t try to tell me that you never thought of a specific way to make money when you grew up. Something – sometime sparked an interest. Just keep up the meditation efforts until you prevail!
Here is the next important question; did you actually work in your dream career? Do you want to again? Do you want to try something different? If you were able to follow your dream count yourself blessed. Many people never get that opportunity. Life throws demands at us as we grow older and sometimes we have to take what we can get for a job. Sometimes those jobs turn into advancements and retirements. Even if you are retired you can still have a new career and after meditation knowledge of what field to pursue should began to glimmer.
This article is a first step that will help determine what your next move should be in order to tackle your new career opportunity. Hold on to your written thoughts. In the next article we will examine ways to bring that list into a manageable ray of hope.
