Comfort coaching, caring gestures, and a compassionate approach are the key elements for young adults to feel safe in your coaching environment.
Life coaching directly enhances the lives of young people impacted by the Juvenile Justice system. Young adults coming from a locked or residential facility without any life skills, lack of family stability, and limited educational resources can be a frighten scene for our society. Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with a coach who offers comfort coaching, caring gestures and a compassionate approach can make all the difference in a young person overall personal development. Being on the front line of this movement has offered me a unique vantage point of this transformation. Coaching in this capacity is challenging, but also rewarding at the same time. The challenge is working with youth who have endured so many roadblocks and challenges before the age of 21 that most adults couldn’t survive. The reward is being able to assist the youth with navigating these challenges and becoming a productive member of society. The joy on their face when they achieve a goal that they couldn’t image of accomplishing is a feeling that’s indescribable. Society tends to overlook this dynamic and judge youth behavior and actions without understanding the person behind the actions. Having the opportunity to receive training in Trauma Informed Care, I was offered the opportunity to learn the anatomy of the brain. You see, our brains don’t fully developed until the age of 25. At that age is when most adults gain the ability to make rational decisions and develop keen logical thinking ability. When a young adult is making an impulsive decision, and reacts simply off emotions. A undeveloped brain could be the driving force behind the negative behavior displayed. As a coach, you’re able to become a solid object and offer moral and emotional support when needed. To summarize how coaching directly impacts the lives of the youth, we can become the glue that hold the pieces of their lives together through comfort coaching, caring gestures and a compassionate approach.
