Insomnia attacks all kinds of people. It does not choose age, race, or sex. People do not talk much about insomnia, but it stresses everyone out.
You have read the title right; there are indeed ways to beat insomnia that do not require you to ingest a sleeping pill. If you have insomnia, do not worry; you are not alone. It is a very common sleep disorder wherein sleep is hard to come by and – even if you do get to sleep – you get easily roused and never to get back to it the rest of the evening.
And if you have insomnia, you would know the negative impacts it has on your daily life. Work becomes of poor quality, and household chores become impossible to carry out. Stress and anxiety start to creep in due to lack of sleep. The daily recommended hours of sleep, which is seven to nine hours, becomes a dream that you cannot even dream about because you are obviously awake the whole night.
There are some cases wherein insomnia is just a temporary problem. Short periods of insomnia that last for a few days or weeks can happen, and usually resolves by itself. Some suffer from insomnia for months at a time.
The good news is that people with insomnia can now turn to acupressure for relief. While acupressure is still considered as an alternative medicine, many people swear by its positive effects. It makes use of physical touch to stimulate the pressure points that matches the different facets of physical and mental health.
It is best to have a professional do acupressure for you, but you can also try it on your own by stimulating the pressure points that are found all over your body. Acupressure has diverse positive effects, and getting you to fall asleep faster while improving its quality is just one of its benefits. There are five pressure points you should try, and here they are.
Spirit Gate – This pressure point is located below the pinkie finger, at the crease of your outer wrist. To treat insomnia, look for the small, hollow space in this area. Apply pressure gently either in a circular or up-and-down movement. Continue doing this for 2 to 3 minutes, then gentle pressure on the left side of the point for a few seconds and then hold the right side. Repeat on the other side of your other wrist.
Three Yin Intersection – This point can be found on the inner leg and just above the ankle. For insomnia treatment, what you have to do is to look for the highest point of your ankle; count four finger widths up your leg, just above the ankle. Having located the point, put deep pressure slightly at the back of your biggest lower-leg bone. Massage with circular or up-and-down motions for 4 to 5 seconds.
Not only does this help induce sleep, it also helps with menstrual cramps and pelvic disorders. Do not do this if you are pregnant since it also induces labor.
Bubbling spring – Bubbling spring is a point that is located on the sole of your foot. If you look at your sole, you would find a little depression appearing just on top of the center of your foot when you curl your toes inward. To treat insomnia, lie on your back and bend your knees in a way that you can reach your feet with both hands. Take one foot in your hand and curl your toes, feeling for the depression on the sole of your foot. Apply firm pressure on this area and massage for a few minutes using a circular motion or an up-and-down motion . It is believed that stimulating this point grounds your energy and induces sleep.
Wind pool – You can find the wind pool at the back of your neck. To find it, try to feel for the mastoid bone behind the ears and follow the groove around to where the neck muscles attach to the skull. To help beat insomnia using this pressure point, clasp your hands together and gently open your palms with your fingers interlocked so that your hands can create a cup-like shape. Apply a deep and firm pressure toward the skull using your thumb. Again, use a circular or up-and-down motion to massage this point for 4 to 5 seconds.
Aside from treating insomnia, this can also help to reduce respiratory symptoms, like coughing. It can also reduce stress and calms the mind.
Inner frontier gate – This point is found on the inner forearm between two tendons. You may ease insomnia by turning your hands over so that your palms are facing up. Take one hand and count two finger widths down towards your wrist crease. Put a steady downward pressure between two tendons located here and then apply a circular or up-and-down motion for 4 to 5 seconds.
This will help put you to sleep as well as soothe nausea, headaches, and stomach pain.
Skeptical? If you already have problems sleeping, there is nothing to lose if you try. Best of all, you do not have to spend money. Try one of these 15 minutes before you go to bed.
