I Can't Stop the Waves!

Ever become obsessd with trying to control the bumps and twists of life...rather than just enjoying the ride?
My friend and I spent the day on a speed boat with my family a few weeks ago. As we sped back to the dock, my friend sat in the seat facing the rear of the boat.
“Don’t you need to see where we’re going? In case there are any big waves to prepare for?”
“Why? It’s not going to change the fact that we’re going over the waves.” She settled in to her seat, grabbed the handle and got ready for the ride.
I thought about that comment for the next few days. I talk to my clients a lot about keeping our focus forward. But my friend made an interesting point…sometimes it’s not as important to keep an eye out as it is to stay loose and flexible, to remain present as things shift and change. Being prepared for the moment matters a lot more than having three contingency plans for each of the ten possible outcomes.
We both made it safely back to the dock…so it doesn’t seem to matter much whether I was scanning the lake for the waves that we were headed towards or she closed her eyes and enjoyed the ride as it came.
