A Small Beginner's Guide to Declutter & Simplify Your Space & Questions to Think About on your way to simplify & transform your life -by Cynthia Manan
Goal
The 1st Goal here is to Declutter One Small Room/Area. Here are some first steps to take on
your decluttering & simplifying journey. Remember…To keep things that 1) bring you joy, 2) add
value and 3) you use often. Collections of things are good but see which ones mean the most to
you and find the right spot for them.
Steps
1) Decide what area you want to tackle first – try to find a small project first – a small room
or area like the bathroom drawers or clothing closet and/or drawers – larger projects
should be saved until the end (like garage organization or paper clutter)
2) Set an intention on how you would like your ideal space/room to turn out
3) Set aside an hour or two to work on that area
4) Play soft music if you like – instrumental preferred or even have fun and hum/sing as you declutter.
If you are able – have a supportive person help you out and work together.
5) Have a bag or some boxes ready to put into categories – 1 for get rid of – throw/recycle, 1
for donation and 1 to move somewhere else. You can also plan to sell an item or give to
someone you know if they would like it.
6) Start sorting out
7) Remember to take a short break and then go back to decluttering – i.e. drink some water,
etc.
8) Clean surfaces like shelves, etc. and floors before putting back items.
9) Create a system where like things are together.
10) After you are done, take out bag and empty boxes and repeat process again for next area – can do another small area or do another day.
(REMEMBER TO DO SOME QUICK DECLUTTERING EVERY WEEK AND REVISIT THAT AREA EVERY MONTH OR FEW MONTHS TO KEEP IT ORGANIZED)
Questions to think about:
1) How do you feel after the area you declutter was clean?
2) What emotions came to the surface after you finished? Freeing? Anxiousness? Any
other emotions?
3) Was there an item/item(s) that you decluttered or are still undecided on that brought
back a difficult memory? What was it? Why is it difficult to let go of this item?
4) Was there an item/item(s) that made you feel like you needed to make some changes (i.e.
an old hobby made you start thinking you needed to find a new one)
