About Me
HI thanks for you interest in coaching services, at this point in time I'm no longer coaching.
Thanks
Joel
My approach to coaching draws extensively from my background in philosophy, which is primarily to be understood as a way of life, and not merely as a stagnate subject matter. Every person is already a philosopher because everyone has a way of life: a set of values, goals, purposes, emotions, interests, beliefs, and desires. These aspects taken together encapsulate what it is like for us to live in the world; it is the way in which we exist in the world.
For most people their way of life (their philosophy) exists mostly in the background of their awareness, and to the extent it is acknowledged it may not be well thought out; nonetheless it is present in every action, desire, value, and thought. As often happens, specific challenges or difficulties in daily living provide opportunities to focus on underlying ways of living that are hidden or that now seem inadequate. In coaching we attempt to address these important areas of living by uncovering what they are, and becoming aware of new ways of living.
In the coaching relationship we are interested in facilitating change, growth, and transformation by listening, asking questions, re-framing views, and providing alternative narratives. The primary aim of coaching is personal wellbeing and wholeness, and as a result it has a healing dimension—it is a practice of care.
My educational background involves both the arts and sciences. I have a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Philosophy. My work experience is primarily in higher education as a college professor teaching philosophy. I became a coach because I had a passion for bringing the excitement of learning and transformation that occurs in college classrooms to others outside of the university who might be interested in that kind of experience. My coaching training is from The Coaches Training Institute (CTI) in San Rafael CA.
