Data-Backed Tips For Effective Email Marketing

Email marketing remains one of the most effective marketing channels for business communication and with more than 205 billions of emails being sent back and forth each day, it still remains the key player used by marketing strategy experts.

When customers were asked how they like to receive an updates from ecommerce business’ promotions and advertisements, they preferred an email newsletter. Email marketing still outperforms PPC, SEO and content marketing.

You also have to keep in mind that email marketing is one of the most cost-effective means of promoting your products and services to your targeted audiences and customers.

Here are data-backed tips for more and high response rate:

1. Send more emails frequently

If you send emails to your subscribers once a month it is likely that they won’t even remember the email you sent them. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you send promotions and advertisements frequently. However, you also have to keep in mind that these emails should be planned and done carefully, so that you won’t have to deal with your clients unsubscribing.

2. Personalize your email without using the recipient’s name

A study made by Temple’s Fox School of Business showed that personalizing your email with the recipient’s name could do more harm than good. You have to ask yourself if the recipient trusts you and if they know who you are because forcing familiarity too soon can come across as being sketchy. Trust is earned and this goes the same way for emails.

3. The best content is free content: Give something away

Think of something you can offer your subscribers for free. It can be a workbook, toolkit or ebook or even a complimentary session to a selection of people to sample your services. Ask them to sign up for your email subscription list and share your giveaway promo on your social media accounts to gather more attention. You can use a Wordpress plugin like KingSumo Giveaways to automate your giveaways and notify publications, influencers and top blogs within your industry about it.

4. Keep your subject lines short

One vital factor that you need to keep in mind is that a majority of your subscribers are reading their emails via mobile devices. Email applications have less space to display the user’s inbox and long subject lines. It is important that you keep your subject lines short and it should be descriptive enough for your subscribers to get an idea of what your email is about. It should complement the message of your email.

5. Timing is everything

It is also important to schedule your emails because people are known to go through their email from the first ones to the last on the list. Most of the times, they are more likely to reply to the most recent ones than those of the last. That’s why, timing is of most importance.

It is observed that the best time to send emails is between 6 and 7 am than those sent on the last hours of working days.

6. Email with emotion (But not too much)

Dramatic and emotionally inclined emails make subscribers cringe and no one wants to read or reply to belligerent emails. Emails that have the right mixture of positivity and negativity get the most response from subscribers. You need to keep in mind to keep it light and cool, be with your subscribers and don’t go overboard.

7. Choose your words carefully

Use words that are applicable and relevant to what your email needs to convey and to increase the chances of getting read and responded to, use the words that show urgency and reflecting time sensitivity. You should have a definitive list of words to use that resonate to your industry’s audience and use these words to your advantage.

8. Emails still reign over Facebook and Twitter

Yes, it can be true that Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms are taking over the online world nowadays. However, you also need to keep in mind that email is still at the top when it comes to content and this is backed up by a study made by SocialTwist. They monitored 119 referral campaigns from top companies and brands and found that email has a significant advantage to convert new customers compared to social media platforms.

9. Add visuals

Constant Contact says there is a correlation between the amount of images in an email and subscriber engagement, after they surveyed over two million customer emails to come up with this data. About 65% of subscribers prefer emails that have images than those without it, according to HubSpot.

It is important to consider your image’s loading speed and not to use irrelevant images.

10. Always use a CTA in your emails

It is important to include a call-to-action (CTA) in your emails. Email marketing experts tested CTAs and found that recipients prefers high-value at low-cost calls to action.

To create an optimized CTA, you have to:

a. Focus on the benefits

b. Avoid using words that may increase friction

c. Use specific copy

d. Maximize the use of white space in your email

e. Use button designs that are appropriately sized and stand out in your emails

11. Give incentives to people who join your list

Offering incentives to people who join your list is the fastest way for you to gather and increase the number of your subscribers. Most brands’ subscriber list double on a daily basis just by handing out incentives. This is one of the best ways in getting noticed in your customer’s inbox.

12. Mobile opens accounts for 47% of all email opens

Email marketing firm Litmus says mobiles accounts for 47% of all email opens. You can do this by creating your email in a one-column template, so it easily converts for mobile users. You also want to keep important tappable icons in the middle of the mobile screens.

13. Send to unopen and unclicks

Your subscribers might be busy and don’t have the time to open your emails. You have to give time and wait for a few days to resend your emails. It is also proven that resending your emails can significantly increase your open and click-through rates.
