What is your Worth?

How do I calculate "what am I worth"? What's my personal ROI? Why am I better than my competitors? What do I bring to the table that others can't?
When communicating about yourself, as a leader or even as an individual contributor, do you think about- . What value do I create for the organization I work with?
How much am I worth?
This is an important question, specifically, now when there’s increasing competition not just between human beings but also between human beings and machines (robots and computers). The era of boasting is over. The era of 17++ yrs of exp in mgmt.. is over. The era of developed 20 apps is over. Tenure & yrs of exp matter only so much now. With organizations becoming more agile, more flexible and most importantly more “commercially & economically sensitive”, every activity that you do, counts- either in cost or in revenue.
Hence, it is absolutely necessary to be able to “quantify” your worth. What’s also called your Personal ROI.
I found this article a great read on PROI: amanet.org/training/articles/Using-Your-Personal-ROI-to-Get-Ahead
Beneficial excerpts from this article:
Like any other resource, you’re only as good as your PROI. You’d better be returning a substantial multiple of your investment on a consistent basis—and more important, you have to be able to prove you are.
A good rule of thumb is you should be able to prove you’ve earned or saved the organization at least three times your base salary every single year. The big Q is: I know I have done a lot, but how do I prove it?
How do I calculate “what am I worth”? What’s my personal ROI? Why am I better than my competitors? What do I bring to the table that others can’t or don’t?
In $ target driven jobs it is easier. Like Sales, account mgmt etc. In most backend jobs- its highly tedious to arrive at a number or even a rough definition. This particularly effects India, where MNCs have their backend units.
This is the challenge I have seen my clients facing, when I am coaching them for bigger aspirations and career. Most clients get intimidated by the question and embarrassed for not having an answer.
Through Flatheels , I coach a lot of Sr. Women Professionals & other leaders to “identify, establish, position & market their personal brand” as a part of which, I ask them one question: “What have you achieved in your previous roles and what are you capable of achieving ahead- in numbers”?
It is one of the most crucial stages to pass during the coaching session. And it is the stage- that takes the longest exploration. The benefit of doing this with a coach, than alone is- that the coach supports you in finding the places, where you will find answers. Doing this alone is possible, but it ain’t easy, and mostly, one never gets to the end- because one’s gotta be too self-critical, brutally honest and dedicate hours thinking through and writing down- who has got the patience? Sometimes, it is even scary- if you don’t find a clear answer and can tremendously hurt your self-confidence.
Here are a couple of my clients testimonials in their own words (identity undisclosed due to confidentiality clauses, required permissions taken to share)
“This exercise changed my perspective about myself. I never knew I did so much and I could do so much- You wouldn’t believe but I already have a new job offer in hand because the interviewer was impressed by my PROI and more by the way I articulated it!” Sr. director, Project Management, Leading IT company
“This has given me a deeper understanding of my own personality, my goals and aspirations, my personal leadership brand and how I would lead my career and life, rather than waiting for chances to bump into me. I now know – I justify my salary and I can proudly throw that number on the face of anyone who questions my position. I no longer feel insecure with “growing up the ladder”- BU head, Banking Operations, leading investment bank
For me, as a coach, I am humbled, every time I hear the words “clarity, awareness, goals, aspirations, dreams, harmony, peace, success, worth, satisfaction, happiness..and more”- when I hear these words in testimonials and value my clients get through my coaching
My PROI is when I hear any multiple of the value I felt I created for them, in their feedback and success they see during and after coaching interventions and keep me posted about.
