“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch
This is a great quote by Neale Donald Walsch, and when I read it I immediately started questioning why most of us never even realize the limitations our personal comfort zones impose upon us.
You may find this stirs your soul and makes you uncomfortable, especially if you’ve come to the conclusion that you’ve let or are letting life pass you by.
For example, when we’re in our 20’s, we may take some chances, but they’re usually not life-changing or even very well thought out because we may still be somewhat immature.
Then we hit our 30’s and start to reflect periodically on what we’ve done with our life up to this point or perhaps an opportunity arises that would offer us something significant but might be a stretch for us.
We consider taking the chance or stepping out into the unknown but often justify not doing it by telling ourselves, “I’m only in my 30’s and have a lot of time left to do this,” or something similar.
We then dismiss the momentary regret or opportunity and return to our comfort zone. What happens then? Another 10 or 20 years or more may pass before we have another reason to consider something different–something out of the zone.
Many of us don’t even realize or become “aware” until our 40’s or perhaps even 50’s or older that we have played it safe, have never really taken a chance on a dream we have or had, and never stepped outside that comfort zone at all.
Then we look back and wish we could live those years over again and perhaps do things differently, be more courageous, take more chances, or be more successful.
Not to worry! It’s not too late! No matter what your age, look inside yourself and find that burning desire or summon up whatever it is you “wish” you had done or accomplished. Then, by all means, step out of that comfort zone and get after it.
Start the business of your dreams, take an exotic trip thousands of miles from home, get out and find your soul mate, but stop sitting at home by yourself wishing you had that soul mate or at your boring job hating it or never taking a trip outside your backyard!
Sure it can be uncomfortable to try something new or pursue a desire, but until you muster the courage to set your underlying fears aside and just plain go after it, you’ll be sitting at an old age no farther ahead than you are now still wishing you had done things differently.
Fear is nothing more than something we all create in our minds (False Evidence Appearing Real). When you look fear of any kind in the face and push through it and take the action you are afraid of taking, the fear will dissipate and fall away.
And, the more you face fear, the less it will surface for you in new situations. With time, you will have reconditioned your subconscious mind to recognize your courage rather than fear as the norm.
The purpose of this article is to motivate you to live your life to the fullest if you’re not already doing so. It took me years to make this leap and start pursuing my desires, and every fear that I looked in the face and pushed through has given me more confidence and courage than I ever thought I was capable of having.
Life is supposed to be easy, fun, and fulfilling, not hard, boring, and lacking. You’ll find when you step out of your comfort zone, everything changes, and life is what it’s meant to be!
